Most of us worry about how we look occasionally…and sometimes frequently. Research shows that most of us say there’s something about our body we’d like to change. It isn’t always easy to accept ourselves and be confident with who we are and how we look.

But if worrying about our appearance or obsessing over the way we look becomes a daily, or hourly, occurrence — that can interfere with our relationships, work and school. Those fears and insecurities may prevent us from doing things we enjoy or pursuing opportunities to meet our goals.

Obsessing over our weight and dieting can lead to bigger problems like eating disorders. And the fear that people will judge us or talk about us can cause massive amounts of anxiety. The truth is this — how other people see us or whether we fit someone else’s standard of beauty isn’t important. What’s important is that we’re healthy and don’t let insecurity and anxiety prevent us from enjoying our lives.

If body image issues or worrying about your appearance are making you feel depressed, anxious or alone, talking to someone about it can help. Reach out to a friend or family member — they’ll probably be more understanding than you think. Or make an appointment to talk to a counselor who can work with you to develop a plan to feel better and more confident.
